I'd like to upgrade my current Nikon D5100 to either the D5300 or D7100.

I've read numerous reviews and comparisons but still unsure. Likely the D5300 would be new and D7100 used.

Particularly of interest is the better AF system of either (D5300 is step up from current camera) and the built in Wifi system would also be useful whilst out and about.

Any real life comparisons of the two? I'm comfortable with the build and ergonomics of the D5100.

Thanks

Would skip the D5300 not a big difference between it and what you currently have would probably skip the D7100 in favour of a D7000 as well as again little difference between the two and would save some £££'s. Or if you want to make the jump to full frame you could pick up a D700 for not much more than a used D7100.

I would go for the d7100. It would be a big improvment over the d5300. The autofocus system on the 7100 is fantastic. As for the commebt above about the 7000. I upgraded from a 7000 to a 7100 and I have to say tgere is a big difference all round. From iso noise performance to autofocus performance and also the extra mp helps if you like to crop images.

Great thanks both. Should have stated also use it for video so there are some improvements there too.

I would agree with others there isn't much of an upgrade between the d5100 and d5300. The biggest improvement with a d7100 would be the controls, the dual control dials allow easier exposure control. The AF will also be between (if you are ok with a small buffer that's around 5-7 shots). Dual SD slots are also an improvement if you want to backup your images by shooting to two cards.

What lenses do you have?

I went D5100 to D7100 and an very happy with the D7100, I bought mine just after D7200 came out, but didn't think the extra £150 for a D7200 was worth spending. The D7100 was Nikons top of the range DX camera, now superceded by the D7200, but the 7100 is still a top camera.

Have just bought a used D7100 and for the price can't recommend any more. Cracking camera and improved spec from my previous so will keep me very busy learning the new functions / menus.

That's a pretty unanimous recommendation thanks!

I have the kit 18-55mm, Nikon 55-200mm VR and 35mm 1.8.

With those lenses the d7100 would be a better/more worthwhile upgrade than a d5300. A move to fx would need all new (and more expensive) lenses and need you to sell everything so not really worth it. If you are happy buying used wait until the d500 is actually released as there is likely to be several d7200s and d7100s at good prices as some upgrade to the d500. It's likely to cause d7100/d7200 used prices to drop too as lots try moving them on at the same time.

Just get a very fast SD card to go with it (150+mb). It makes the D7100 shine.

Great thanks, that's useful; currently only have 45 MB/s cards so time for an upgrade there too.

Would also like to upgrade the kit lens to a 17-50 Tamron F/2.8 or similar but that will have to wait a little longer...
