Yes
Hey guys, im after a recommendation to a standard (17/18mm - 50mm+ zoom)

im primarily looking second hand at the moment. under £250 would be excellent. im not really in need of anything wider than 17mm.

i had nikons 17-55 f2.8 for a few years and obviously loved it. id quite like the constant apeture but its not essential because i like primes for a lot of work, so this is more of a walkabout lens. what could anyone recommend? i was looking at the nikon 18-70mm being one of the cheapest options as it gets good results, has a nice range and is cheap! ive used one before and liked it. im not a fan of the 18-55mm and to be honest have been unimpressed with the results ive had when trying one out. sigma have a few offerings, as do tamron that seem to get mixed reviews

sharpness, build and to an extent af speed are all important to me.

it'd be paired with a d300 (when i get one)

Hard to beat the 18-70 that you've already mentionned, especially on a budget. Not sure if they'll still have it but Mifsuds have one listed in their current ad in AP - £179.

+1 for the tamron.

id say in order from cheapest to expensive and best order quality for the kind of focal range you want:

1. nikon 18-70dx
2. sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4
3. sigma 18-50 f/2.8
4. tamron 17-50 f/2.8
5. nikon 16-85VR *
6. nikon 17-55 f/2.8

* probably not as high quality and aperture doesnt go as wide as the sigma/tamron but does have VR

I swapped my 18-70 Nikon for the Sigma 18-50 2.8. The Siggy is sharper and 2.8 @ 50mm is great.

Agreed! All good lenses. (y)
