Nikon Wide Prime

So recently I have moved towards a prime lens set-up for most of my work and I now just have a small hole in the line up to plug.

I'm after a wide angle prime around the 20-24mm range to give me close to a 35mm FF equivalent. It seems from reviews that the quality of these lenses in nikons lineup isn't brilliant.

Basically the lens I have short listed are Nikon 20 f2.8, Nikon 24 f2.8, Signa 20 f1.8 and Signa 24 f1.8. Does anybody have any experience of any if these lens?

Niton 24mm f2.8 seems good. I tried a new one from Amazon prior to buying a used one from the forum I'm very pleased with its performance.

Yeah I missed out on that one ;-) I have heard really mixed things but the 24 would be perfect focal length (between 11-16, 35, 50, 85) and size (for travelling) I just don't want to buy a lens I would be disappointed with and not use. You don't have any full size images I could have a gander at by any chance do you?

I've had several copies of both 20 and 24mm 2.8D, both are fine on DX/FX and wonderfully compact. I'd say the 24mm just has the edge in terms of IQ but there's not a lot in it. I'll see if I've got any pics left from when I had them later on.

In Thom's word:
"At 24mm, this lens may be as sharp as the 24mm f/2.8 Nikkor, which I think is one of the sharpest wide angles Nikon has made.
Even at 20mm it rivals the 20mm f/2.8 Nikkor in almost every performance aspect. Wow!
"

Of course he's speaking of the 12-24mm f/4. A zoom, which you're so not after! :D

But should you reconsider, I can only give it a highly recommended! (y)

24 f2.8 was okay for me until I got the 1.4 - maybe not what you want but the 35 f2 is also a great lens IMO.

I just got rid of the 12-24 tokina in favour of the 11-16 and I was contemplating the Nikon 12-24 but I find the f4 too slow for a lot of what I shoot

Will see what I've got! I've heard the 24 is fine on DX (D7000) but not so good on a full frame body.

I've just ordered a 17-50 Sigma to take with me to Paris, if I get on with the size I can see my 24mm being redundant already!

Yeah it would be for use on DX, I'm hoping it should work well as most issues are with soft corners which obviously isn't an issue with the DX sensor

I'll put links as these are full size JPGs:

20mm @ f/2.8 (only shot I can find at 2.8! Very noisy, focus on 'p cresc' halfway down left page)

20mm @ f/11 (quite a bit of shadow pushing as exposed for the sky)

24mm @ f/3.2 (couldn't find a 2.8 example)

Cheers mate, these are brilliant, the 24 performs much better than I had been lead to believe

The Zeiss 21/2.8 is a stellar WA lens. I really don't understand why it's never on peoples priority list.

The sigma 20mm 1.8 is a massively underrated lens on both DX and FX. Second hand they're very cheap. Perfectly useable at 1.8, and exceptional from 2.8 (where most wide primes start from anyway). I've had one for about 5 years on various bodies and it more than holds it's own compared to my Nikon 24-70 / 16-35.

Hi Dan,

Do you have any samples I could take a look at? I have seen one for a really great price but the samples I have seen at f1.8 are a bit disappointing

I'm away from my pc but there's plenty in my Flickr photo stream if you search for "sigma 20mm".

If you're not convinced at f1.8, then just view it as a 2.8 prime. Its brilliantly sharp from 2.8 onwards and the ability to go to f1.8 is really useful.

A couple of random examples (800 pixels admittedly)..

I just picked up a sigma 20mm at an exceptional price and I'm very impressed. Got it to use as an UWA on a full frame but its equally good on DX. Stopped down to f2.8 its exceptionally sharp.

Hi mate,

Glad you like it, it was my original choice an I really like the fact I have the option of f1.8 for really low light shooting. You don't have a link for any more exceptionally priced ones do you :naughty:

Worth keeping an eye on eBay, they gave gone from as little as £160ish on there recently. Having kept half an eye on the 20mm prime market for a while the prices are as high as they have been for a while, especially for the nikon. Sub £250 is a bargain.

Yeah seen some good prices on eBay in the completed listings, will keep an eye out. MPB have two for 279/289 which is tempting considering the QC can been sketchy on these lenses
