I agree the compression has ruined this image looks soft to me throughout but that is most likely due to web imaging. Have you got flickr or a like that you could post from.
The image composition is not the best as the big highlight in the background attracts your eye more than the actual rose (subject) and rose need a little lift too.
Think there is a great image to be had with the rose if it is still there.
