post some of your first ever motorsport shots

Here are a couple of my first shots I ever took

Took with my trusty old 350D exif made me laugh shot at 1/1000 but it did get into that weeks motorsport news. In return for a copy of the series of shots I took I also got my first ride in a WRC car:D

and another 350D shot with my Sigma 100-300

So it may not be the hight of the autosport season, but I am sure there are still some events that bring up interesting and amazing shots ... please post!

Well I'll jump in with the first ever event I bothered to take my point and shoot to, New Zealand Rally 2002
All the photo's are poor quality scans unfortunatly but this was long before I discovered digital...

I like to think I've improved a bit.

My rally shots were followed by a Digital point and shoot, but before I knew what panning was...
Just stuck my camera through a link in the fence and tried to guess the shutter lag to when a car would be in shot. I have applied noise reduction to these as they were super noisy to begin with!

Hopefully now I've got a good camera and at least an inkling of a clue I can get some better shots at Melbourne or Sepang this year... Hey at least I know what panning is now;)

29th April 2007.
I took my shiney new D80 and sigma 18-200 to Curborough with high hopes and bags of enthusiasm.
I had done lots of research so for most of the day opted for high shutter speeds, 1/400s - 1/1000s I think. I shot in manual so I could also control the aperture and let autoISO do it's thing.

1st motorsports shot ever

All of these are jpeg's straight from the camera, resized to 800px and saved, no cropping, no curves nowt else done.
Curiously I took over 1400 shots that day, and I only have one battery and I don't think it went flat. I was just holding the shutter down.
These days I pick my moment, and do well to take 200 in a day.

OK, strictly this is m second with a DSLR, but my first was all manual focus, f8, no clue what i'm doing, 500mm mirror. haha!

But...

Hopefully I seem to ge 'getting there' but still a bit of a way to go.

I don't understand why people have kept blurred shots  I just delete mine.

Here's mine.

The first time I tried shooting motorsport (other than the '94 British GP at Silverstone with a 35mm p&s) was a week after I got my 20D at Le Mans, only having the kit lens didn't help, this was the average standard:

But this one I was rather more pleased with:

One of my early drag racing images, this shot must be over 25 years old, shot on slide film, probably agfa film stock.. Going by the post of Rob_W the car 'Money Hungry' must still be around. As a bonus trivia fact you see the Money Hungry graphic on the side of the car, well real £1 notes were lacquered into the graphic.

Took this at the Snowman rally near Inverness about 10 years ago with a Canon 1000F, it was my favourite at the time because it had 'movement' ( i remember taking ait at 1/8th second), but I still can't decide whether it's creative blur or rubbish. You decide!

These were taken over a 2 yr period (2005 - 2006) where I switched from recording a rally on video, to photographing them.

At the time I often wandered why I bothered.

but a bit of trial and error and LOTS of perseverance and I have improved a little, but by far enjoy it more than video.

my 1st attempt to photo at Rally GB December 2004 and a borrowed camera from my dad.

Thanks for the help on the forum and things have improved

One of my very earliest from quite some years ago (probably circa 15-16 years ago) with a cheap old 35mm film camera...

Some great before and after pics from peoples improvements. What I`d like to know is how many of the "after" shots have been photoshop enhanced and how many are straight out the camera like a lot of the "before" pictures

Haha...not a snowball's chance in hell of seeing my first motorsport shots.
They're all on negatives from 1980 something or other and buried away somewhere in boxes.

First time doing motorsport photography with a bridge camera, all I knew was to use shutter mode and follow the car to get motion

I got one fairly sucessful pan apart from half the cars missing

My attempt at a racing shot

Got hooked and have spent a few pounds and now getting shots like this

What an awesome thread! Nice to see some of the pros that i've been in awe of there work and aspiring to produce images like once were producing poor shots aswell :D Theres hope out there for us all (somewhere) ;)

I shall pull out some of my first images when i get home :D

2 of my shots from my first events with my dslr back in 2010 on my old 1000d:)

This is an old thread, actually looks like it was started at the same time that I actually got my first digital camera in 2008 (student loan well rinsed ;) ) a Canon s3 IS Bridge camera - 6 mega-pixels of wonder :D, I had an Olympus om4 film cam (actually still have) which i probably used 3 times prior to getting something that didn't require a dark room

first ever shots with the camera at an f1 test, when they were free and I was young (or stupid) enough to sneak through an empty garage at Silverstone... even stood on the pit wall mid test, I wish i could do that now :D :( I cant believe it was only 5 years ago - still It shows Photoshop has been with me since day one :D

This one is a lot more representative (when i wasnt lucky enough to be in the pit lane)

and then 3 years later (firmly routed to the spectator areas now and since being lucky in 2008)

Sebastian Vettle by Fireproof_Art, on Flickr

actually looking at this I quite like the old ones (I assure you the fact that I only have 10 photos left after 2 years of using the bridge camera that these were flukes) :(

I'm really looking forward to 2013 - Hopefully something new will be seen from me
