Printing LARGE!

Hi all,

I would really like to get a few wall canvasses made from photos I've taken. The only concern is that they were taken with a Canon 40D that, while being a great camera, has a relatively low megapixel count (10.1MP I believe).

Will this effect how sharp the blown up image will look? I'm not talking about a canvass the size of a house end but something substantial enough to stand out.

Cheers,

Danny.

Had a few printed from my 1000D, slight crop @ 10mp........ No problems at 1x1.5 metres...... How big were you thinking? :)

Viewing distance matters. You'll get away with smaller MPs interpolated to bigger sizes if you're not likely to closely scrutinise the detail. Also, canvas is a hugely forgiving medium because the texture has a natural degrading effect on the detail anyway. It's great for sort of thing Rich has done above but it wont render exquisite detail in the way photo quality paper does, which doesn't matter if you want to make a statement piece to hang on a wall and admire from 6ft or so.

The shot I'm looking to put onto canvass is a long exposure night shot with quite a few lights so this could go either way I suppose. I'd upload the pic if I had the first idea how to :)

If you upload it to a hosting service like Flickr you can them embed the link to it in a post here in the forum.....

That shot should look great printed big.
Don't worry about 'only' 10Mp. I had an A1 print done from a 20D image (8Mp) and it looked great viewed at normal viewing distances (4ft or more).

I agree with Chris about recommending not too much texture in the canvas for that sort of shot.
I'd go even further and say a gloss finish would give lovely deep inky blues that could give the print real WOW. You can get them ready to hang, like this...

Cheers Danny, and Duncan and Chris are right, canvas is actually more forgiving than you think. Love your shot BTW mate, would be happy to hang a copy :)

When you consider most pictures like this are viewed from across the room sitting on the sofa I wouldn't fret about size. Constables "Haywain" looks a right mess at 6 inches. I wish I could paint so messily :D

.....and to think he was working with 0 Megapixels and he did a half-decent job! :)

Really glad I asked the question now. This forum is an invaluable recourse!

I have printed 80"x40" from my 1D Mk3 without the aid of any specialist software. You cand stand 6 inches away and it's perfectly acceptable.
