Does anyone have any particular recommendations for brands to use, or any suggestions of ones to steer clear of?

The accepted wisdom seems to be that +R is better than -R, but I note that Verbatim only do archival gold DVDs in -R format

Are you sure you want to use DVDs? Unless you keep on top of the job, they're a chore.

As an alternative, you can make duplicate backups to two or more external hard drives, keeping one off-site or well away from your PC. When a drive fails or fills up, it's a simple and fairly quick job to transfer everything from one of the duplicates onto a new drive, which'll be bigger and cheaper.

I have been archiving my pics on to CD-R (I'm organised, me :) ) and copying them on to an external 1tb USB hard disk for ease of access. However, my new 5D mk II creates such large files that CD-Rs would fill up very quickly, hence DVDs are a better option now.
