Well a first good effort Paul, no exif showing so it is hard to comment too much. Looks like the light was quite strong so try to underexpose by a stop or two and see what results you get. It will take a while, but you will get to know roughly how your lens acts under different lighting conditions and with what settings you have set on the camera, you will then automatically adjust accordingly without thinking too much about it.
