Remote release for shots over extended period

Hi

I have a bird feeder in my garden and would like to set my camera up on a tripod near to it but release the shutter from inside the house. I do have an IR remote which works fine, but the IR release function times out after 15 mins (max setting) and I have to go back to the camera to reset it. I thought of getting a cable release but it would need to be 4 or 5 metres long and I don't see those for sale - they all seem to be a metre or so only. I guess a wireless remote is the "correct" solution but I find that very expensive for the amount of use I would give it. Any ideas? The camera is a D7100.

Cheers

Fred

Great! I'd written off wireless remotes after seeing the prices of the "official" kit! Pretty sure it will be the same as for the D7000, most things are. Thanks!

Got it and it's brilliant! Simple but effective. Thanks again.

Are the Yongnuo flash units themselves considered good? They also appear to be keenly priced.

eh, why the nsfw tag?

Yongnuo are a great flash triggers that will also remote fire you camera.
