Removing moire filter?

Has anyone removed the moire filter from the DSLR?

Doing so should increase sharpness, but of course also increase the risk of moire.

It would be interesting to hear thoughts on this.

I have read about it and there is a US firm that will do it for a price.
I would not risk it.

A few people have had it done on the D3 due to the (relatively) low accuity. Gives about 15-20% more real resolution.

There is a big thread on DPReview with some before and after shots.

As usual, the price you pay is moire - for landscape photographers, you'll happily pay the price.. for others ie if you have fabrics in the scene its not worth it.

I suppose the question is

- is it easier to remove moire from a DSLR pic which has the moire filter removed, or
- is it easier to to get the higher resolution/sharpness via PP?

I've never been to DPReview - off there now to have a nosy ...

I suppose it depends on what you shoot, if you shoot stuff with textures lightly to give moire it's probably better to leave it on, if you don't (and can afford it) maybe better to take it off.

I can't imagine it will be cheap, and of course would invalidate any warranty.

Unless you wait two years for the warranty to expire, in which case there would be a newer camera with sharper images straight out of camera, and higher resolution :)
