I have finally decided that my laptop is past it. Takes far too long to do anything and is basically slowing me down.

So what I am faced with is finding something that will run Photoshop and a DNP DS40.

I wondered if there are any other options rather than Laptops for this? Can it be done using tablets etc?

Microsoft Surface Pro? Or another windows-based tablet might do?

But they won't have the grunt of a full size laptop, so don't expect editing etc to be particularly speedy.

Many on here seem to recommend PCSpecialist - http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/
I used them a few days ago for a laptop for my daughter and have nothing but praise so it might be worth asking them for a few suggestions if you go for a replacement laptop Andrew.
As KitsuneAndy says, anything less than a laptop may not be much of an upgrade given what you say about your current one..

My laptop copes perfectly fine with CS6, i have an i5 toshiba with 8gb ram, intel on board graphics

I recommend core i5 or higher, preferably quad core with at least 6gb Ram, I have 8gb and its never let me down. If your really after better performance look at i7 and the likes of 8gb-16gb with an SSD hard drive and dedicated graphics. be prepared to pay much more though. I did come across a dell recently with an amd dedicated card and an i7 with 12-16gb RAM with a 1080p screen, and for its spec was relatively cheap

Also dont quiver at the sound of windows 8 or 8.1, windows 10 is due out very soon and I've been using the tech preview since february and its a completely different kettle. great in fact and it will be a free upgrade

If you want the best bang for your buck in terms of speed of processing of large images then a desk top will always beat a laptop, which will always beat a tablet. You can get an android tablet which will handle RAW images and do most of the usual post processing, but you'll probably need to add a USB keyboard to stop some programs from responding in a silly way to touch screens. I did that on my last holiday. Since I had nothing better to do wih my time and wanted to post photographs it was quite entertaining and useful to struggle for half an hour to do something that would have taken a minute on my desk computer.

If you are adamant you don't want a laptop, I'd maybe consider a Gigabyte Brix - although you would have to get quite spendy to get one with the grunt for Photoshop etc.
You would of course have the problem ofcarting a monitor/keyboard/mouse around with you. You could aleviate this by attaching the Brix to the monitor.
The only real advantage I can see over buying a laptop is that you can pick a good monitor for displaying/editing photos, which would be superior to most laptop displays.

I've got a Surface Pro 3. All of Adobe Creative Cloud runs fine and without delay. My model is the i5 8GB 256GB disk and 128GB microsd.

There is also an i7 available, plenty of grunt.

The advantage is that it can be a tablet when you need it, and when in its dock and connected to my 30" monitor and keyboard it is a desktop.

Really like it.
