I drove across to Wales for the Severn Valley Stages at the weekend - my first time spectating at a gravel rally - I really enjoyed it!

We started off at Sweet Lamb stage, but the weather was rubbish, with horizontal rain at points. It was good to spectate at, but not great for photographing from where I was standing.

In the afternoon we moved to Myherin, thankfully the weather had improved, and so had the photography prospects. Here are a few of my favourite shots from the afternoon stage:

Nice. Conditions certainly weren't great.

Interesting that you managed to move - was it easy? enough space in the spectator area to get in and out?

I went to SS1 - something you learn when having to get shots of certain cars - as I was working for the organising club this weekend as well as some websites is that SS1 always best! also helped with the weather.

Don't really want to hijack your thread with my images but if you want to check out a few, here:

Great shots, and some nice ones on your Flickr too! Looks like it was a lovely day compared to most rallies weather wise too! :)

It was surprisingly easy to move - we even stopped for third breakfast in the cafe at Devil's Bridge. Parking was easy at Sweet Lamb, then I think we just filled a gap from someone who had left at Myherin.

I especially like your Mark Higgins shot - I'm guessing that was from a remote!

Thanks. It was a day of two halves - the morning was cold and windy with low cloud and horizontal rain.

Its funny you should say that. On SS1 I had 2 remotes out and on SS5 I had 1 remote.

The higgins shot was not from a remote though! it was from my main camera. This was the remote angle at that corner

I need to learn how to set the remotes up to work best - I did a bit of a schoolboy error this weekend. I have been using Hanhal captur remotes which don't fire at the full "pace" of the shutter burst. They are also notorious for getting stuck on - i.e just keep firing off shots if you hold the shutter for 3 seconds or more leading to 100s and sometimes 1000s of wasted photos, filling the buffer and just clunking away slowly missing the action....

So.... I bought myself some pocketwizards which fire off at the max speed of the camera.

I placed my 7D1 to take this shot, in front of me:

I couldnt qutie see the cars come into view so I had to fire the remote via my hand early, obviously firing the second remote at the same time as well (Because they are both linked to the same trasmitter)

This meant that the second remote behind me - at this corner (you can see me and my remote to the left of the windscreen)

... Buffer was filled as it was firing so fast and early to cover the 7D1 shot, and didn't clear before ingram and the top boys had gone past, so up until i realised this might be happening, at about car 10... I have nothing from what was my "go to" remote shot!!!!! Need a rethink or faster cards I think.
