… looks like the very pale face was overexposed at SR
as the greyish tone is generated from "no detail"

Thanks for the comments - yes it he was flash-lit as it was a setup shot. You can probably see the flash coming from front left behind the table leg. There was also a flash behind him lighting the wall to remove a hard shadow. Both pointing directly upward to try to bounce off bottom of table. Front flash was on on 1/128th power (lowest it will go) and rear was maybe 1/64th or 1/32th power. Can't quite remember now. Both were yonguo ex565 on triggers.

I did do some post in RAW with shadows and highlights and the tone curve, and mono-chroming it of course. Maybe some other bits too until I liked the look of it but can't now remember what they were.
