I think the 16-85 takes 67mm filters so there shouldn't be any problem using a step up ring to fit a 72mm filter on it. Problems can occur when using step down rings to use smaller filters (cheaper?) on lenses which need larger filters than the user has. On other potential problem is that you probably won't be able to fit the hood when the oversize filter is fitted and that could introduce flare (especially when using a filter). This risk can be avoided by making sure that direct light doesn't hit the front element or filter using a hand or other item to throw a shadow onto them - but make sure the shade doesn't creep into the shot!
I have a 67-77mm step up ring so I can use my Heliopan 77mm CPL with the 16-85 and have just taken it outside to see if it vignettes (which it doesn't, even at 16mm) so I reckon it will be ok with the 67-72mm step up ring too!
