Ive heard alot about how good this lens is, its apparantly razor sharp :cautious:, so im thinking of buying this lens, just wondered if any of you guy's and gals could give me some info on it and has anybody got any shots taken with this lens for me to look at? Also what other len's are as good as or better than this for around the same price range:thinking:.......

Thanks

Hi
I've got this lens, and yes it is super sharp. Bit soft at 2.8 but I tend to stop down anyway.
The lens is noisy (but then again I always compare it to my USM lens! :bang:)
and I've found it hunts a lot in low light. Apart from that, I really love it.
I'll try find an image I've taken with it.
Sarah

Edit: tis not a portrait, I usually use my 105 or 50mm for those, but this is an image taken with thw 40D and 17-50

Thanks for the reply, would you say this lens would be good for formal portraits......

ya it would, i haven't got around to do my photos from 2 months back, but the images are very good :)

i think at 2.8 its only a bit soft around the edges, but then i like that sort of effects in my shots when the subject is the center piece

Why not use the lens name as search criteria on Flickr and/or pbase? You'll have more shots than you would ever need to see. :)

the above post is also incredible true

i think the tamron 17-35 and the tamron 17-50 are the best value lenses i have bought unfortunately the 35mm is a bit short for me. the 17-50 is especially versatile when it's on a cropped body. which is what the 24-70 should feel like on a full frame.

go get it tiger, you won't regret it

added, if you realy want to complain, the focus motor on the 17-50mm (the new ones with focus motor) is a bit noisy but its not slow as it doesn;t have far to rotate to focus the full range

thanks for the replys guys and gals, flickr here i come :D

For the dosh, it's a great lens. Owned both 17-50 and the 28-75. Very sharp, but IMO didn't have the colour rendition of say a Canon L series, and certainly not the AF.

When I got my 17-50 i compared it to a Nikon 50/1.4 and a Canon 50/1.4 and at 2.8 the Tamron was sharper ( 50mm ). It's a bit noisy, and not that great at low light, but you learn to live with it. The build quality is rubbish, I had to tighten the screws on the front element on mine, but since its been fine. Here are some photos with it

i would also give the tamron a nod, i bought it as I wasnt willing to splash out loads of cash on the canon IS alternative. My only complaint is the motor is a bit noisy, but so is the motor of the nifty fifty, and thats still a great value lens.

those images are awesome!

I'm about to purchase a used one with a wobbly front element.

Is this hard to do? I've read threads about it but wanted to know from someone first hand. Any tips for this appreciated!

Oliver

Played around with one of these last week...this is the nearest I got to a portrait shot!

This was taken on a 400d...f2.8 at 50mm with a small amount of PP sharpening...

I thought it was an excellent lens for the money, and better than Sigma's equivalents.
