Hi all, A friend of mine is debuting in this weekends Thundersport GB races, I have managed to get hold of tickets for the weekend.

Although I have studied the circuit map and seen the various spectator points, including the infield area, I am still unsure of what vantage points I may get. Any tips and hints gratefully received. As to kit I will be taking my 5d3 along with 120-300 f2.8 sport, 2x tc and 24-70 for some wide shots.

Thanks all

Enjoy the racing, I did Thundersport at Brands a few weeks ago, some really good close racing.

Not been to Donny since 2013 myself but it's still pretty much the same. Here's my galleries to give you some idea. http://www.ae-photography.co.uk/albums/280913-msvr-donington-photos/ & http://www.ae-photography.co.uk/albums/290913-msvr-donington-photos/

I think the 120-300 should be ideal. I used a version of that back then and with the TC you could get through the fence for a startline pack shot. Also bottom of the Craner curves is good for showing racing shots. I also like doing Coppice over the crest. Again with 600mm you can get through the fence. To get close you need plenty of zoom, and be prepared to walk around... or maybe drive around as shouldn't be very busy as the Craners are steep going up and down all day ;-)

cheers

Thanks for theadvice Az, batteries are now all charged ready. Checked the settings on the lens and set my custom functions to try and ease things, fingers crossed for suitable weather now :)

I shot Donny through the fence with a 120-300 last year. Only a few examples here but might help http://www.polarityphoto.co.uk/World-Superbike-Donnington-Par/

As Az_Gti says coppice over the crest is nice and not shown in my link above. Also if you can get there early try the exit of the Melbourn loop, opposite the pit straight/paddock/media center. It will be busy there but you get some good stuff. My advice though is dont be tempted to stay there long. Keep moving round the track.

I also shot there as media for BSB the weekend before last, great track to shoot. www.polarityphoto.co.uk/gallery/n-KqmQxD/

Thanks for the info and some great pictures. Out of curiosity, what camera do you use. I shot Donnington this last weekend with my 5d3 and 120-300 and had my 2xtc attached most of the time.
Managed some good shots from inside Roberts and also through Craner and the Old Hairpin.
Here are some the shots I took at the weekend.

Sex on the start/finish straight is best done late at night during the Monsters of Rock rather than at noon on a race day!!!
