Tripod heads and L Plates

I am looking into getting a new tripod head so that I can use an l plate. At the moment I am using a Manfrotto head, but there does not seem to be any ideal solution to use an L plate on it, and Manfrottos own version does not seem too good. Does anyone have any suggestions for tripod heads that are L Plate compatible as I have done a little Googling but have absolutely no idea where to start. Any suggestions are appreciated. It would be for a Nikon D800 in the event that weight is any consideration.

Any head that is Arca-Swiss compatible will be okay with an L-plate. I use Induro heads FWIW but Redsnapper, Benro and many others will be suitable.

What bob said, Arca Swiss compatible. I use a redsnapper and Arca-swiss and I can recommend both. Depends on how much you wanna spend, generally one with a lot of torque and good smooth ball action is what your looking for.

Or this is a fairly good review of top-end ball heads.............

I've just done exactly the same thing. Sunwayfoto do have the plates and a little conversion goodie for converting some Manfrotto heads.

I eventually ended up buying a Sunwayfoto head and L-Bracket along with some other plates for my longer lenses and to be honest the quality is pretty damn good, but a lot less than the likes of Wimberly, Arca-Swiss, Kirk etc.

The cost of the new complete head costs more than converting the Manfrotto head, but I then sold the Manfrotto head to offset the cost. Had I have just converted I wouldn't have been able to sell the manfrotto head and it would have ended up costing me more.

I bought from these guys. They are very helpful, answered all of my questions quickly.

I bought this head. It's an ex-Demo but in perfect condition. you wouldn't know it was ex-demo if they didn't say so. Holds my 6D with 70-200 very sturdy.

I've got a Sunwayfoto L-bracket coupled with one of their heads, albeit for Canon, and they work just great and a darn sight cheaper than better-known brands.

you can get generic arca swiss l plates off ebay for a fiver or less ;)

The problem is they are generic which usually means you loose access to the remote shutter release plug. I'd rather pay a bit more for a plate made to fit the camera.

The L plate for my 6D was around £70, from sunwayfoto which is half the price of a Kirk and nearly £100 less than RRS.

Still expensive for what they are, but aren't all camera accessories :(
