Spent the weekend in Gloucester & mananged to fit in a visit to Slimbridge - I was expecting a few hides looking out across the estuary but it's a superb place for families & more importantly for taking photos! - Saw lots of other like minded people with lenses of all sizes! Working my way through over 150 shots but these I have uploaded to Flickr first - have linked to the "large" image although the "original" is there if you prefer (?) ...

Paul ;)

Just looked through these and they don't seem as sharp as they could be. I say could be because looking at the second one the lens can do nice and sharp - but it seems to be on the grass in front of the bird rather than the bird itself.

I don't know anything about Nikons so can't suggest what the cause might be. On my Canon when I first got it the camera was choosing the autofocus point and choosing the wrong thing most of the time - so I changed it to middle point only and manual selection of the rest. Might be worth taking a shot of a focus test sheet (or a ruler angled away from you with a target line across it) and checking the lens focuses on what you aim at.

Thanks Robert I'll look into that ... Paul ;)

aye i agree with Robert, the focus spot seems to be random!
they are not bad at all though, i like the flamingo

Matty & Robert - as per this post - I have found that the EXIF data on all my shots show the camera was shooting at 1600 ISO (I knew ISO was on Auto but never set it to 1600) - Would this have anything to do with how the photos looked to you (?)

PS - Any help on the focusing side would be greatly appreciated too!

I would not have guessed they were 1600 iso at first look. However looking again they do look like they have had noise reduction applied to them - giving that too smooth look and erasing any fine detail.

As to focusing - do a test to eliminate hardware problems.

There are lots of web sites with free download focus charts this one looks OK

Robert - thanks yes I did remove noise from the images & used USM at 75 (both in PSP X) - I will do the focus test in the next few days - I'm annoyed that the pics should have been better but at least they are passable (I will check more thoroughly in future :bonk:) ... thanks for the help ... They are still a series of pictures that I would be more than happy to have in my collection in spite of the comments of the purists above. Makes me put the venue on the list of places to visit. Only a couple of miles from Welney and still haven't visited with a camera!

Fangman - thanks & yes I am happy (sort of) but as always keen to improve and the comments here & in my other thread have been most helpful - If you get the chance to visit Slimbridge I'd highly recommend it for the picture potential ... Paul ;)
