It still sucks for smaller birds.
This was taken manually using 30fps pre-capture and zone focus. It was also taken from ~ 45 ft at 600mm. IDT the zone (DOF) was deep enough; definitely not the greatest image. But other than sheer luck, I have never found anything that works reliably for smaller/faster birds in flight (other than a couple rare situations).
