Just started out using a Nikon 105mm f2.8 micro lens with my D90. Any tips of how you would have improved on the photo/ PP below would be gratefully received.

ISO400, 105mm, f4, 1/40, remote with tripod, manual focus, onboard flash (waiting for funds for an off camera).

Sack the tripod for insect stuff like this. Gotta be hand held and focus by moving back and forth. A sligtly deeper Dof (narrower aperture around f11 - f16) will help too.(y)
 
I agree with the tripod comment. Can you dial down the flash on a D90, not a Nikon man so wouldn't know how to. When I was stuck using the on board flash I used to tape some grease proof paper or a bit of a plastic milk bottle in front of it to defuse it a little.
Maybe use levels to tone down the highlights a bit in PP.
