Morning all,

My wife and I have started doing a lot more walking and there are lots of shots I'm looking at that will require me laying down, I wondered if anyone had suggestions of clothing? Essentially I need something that won't make me boil but will keep me dry when I lay down or get rained on.

I have found overtrousers etc but I dehydrate they make me sweat too much.

Cheers all,

Thom

Try Jack Pyke hunting clothes. They do very good trousers which are pretty waterproof but breathable and don't rustle. I find hunting clothes in general very good for photography as they are after the same things - muted colours, quiet, weatherproof and lots of pockets, but they are cheaper than specialised photography clothes.

Back in the day, when I used to get to lie down in bogs for a living, I found shorts and teeshirt best. Doesn't keep you dry but there is little to get wet and subsequent drying and cleaning (of both clothes and self) is quick and simple.

I have some Rab vertex trousers, lightweight, water resistant and quick drying. I also have a Rab long jacket thats light, very warm and water resistant.

Try somewhere like Cotswold Outdoor for good advice related to your needs.
Or have you thought about using a rollup foam mat, similar to lightweight camping use, or shooting?

I have a set of Paramo Jacket & trousers - they use a cleaver combination of modern fabrics that make water move away from you to the outside of them.

The result is something that is waterproof in most situations, but more importantly actively keep you dry - so as you sweat this is wicked away as well.

The result can be odd at times - one time I was taking macros of some small flowers and kneeling on wet grass.
While I was kneeling down, the pressure of my knee on the ground was sufficient to compress the fabrics and push the water against me - so my knee felt wet.
When I stood up, the water wicked away and my trousers were dry!

They also have a range of zips, etc, to allow toy to open sections in the sleeves & legs to help keep cool on warmer days.

Not cheap, but I've been impressed by them.

shorts under trousers and a one on one off rule.
I used to hate overtrousers till i did a lot of running and realized the trick is to remove at least one layer when you put them on!
so now when walking its shorts as a baselayer with trousers on top if the weather requires it. If its raining or i need waterproof trousers then its a swap rather than a new layer. The result is no more boil in the bag!
As a happy aside i almost always have an extra layer that can be removed on sunny days when going up steep hills

If you're willing to spend a bit, I would highly recommend the Berghaus Gore-Tex PacLite jacket and over trousers. It's extremely breathable, completely waterproof and importantly (for me) it packs right down to a small ball which you can stick in a bag when you don't need it.

My recommendations come from owning both the jacket and over trousers for six years. I cycle to work every day, and it lives in my small 20L rucksack, it's even gone with me to France on cycling trip! It performs really well when hiking. On the plus side, if you get the black jacket - it looks very professional, to the point where I have worn it over my blazer at job interviews.

I'll stop rattling on :D...
Give us a shout if you want to know more!

The choice these days is vast as is the price range. I suggest you visit one of the high street chains to see what is available and get some advice. Paramo are very good but pricey. I wear Craghoppers for dog walking all year round both lined and unlined and they are fine. Golf gear is also fine. Anything waterproof and breathable should be fine, but as always you get what you pay for. Some over trousers work well but I prefer just one layer.
