What wide angle lens for Canon?

Hi all

I have a Canon 650d with kit lens (18-55mm) and would like to experiment with wider angle shots. I like shooting land/cityscapes, especially long exposures.

I'm looking at the Canon 10-18mm EF-S STM lens as a budget starter lens, but are there better lenses out there for similar money?
Would I be better with a prime lens for that price?
Should I look at a higher quality used lens?

Any comments appreciated!

I've used the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 in the past & it's a great lens. If you can pick up a used one in mint condition you'll be picking up a bargain.

They're not fantastic but I've got a few sample shots from the Sigma;

And a bonus photo of my face for a sense of the width you get at 10mm - https://www.flickr.com/photos/markwalker/4061027261/in/set-72157603830604010/

I have a Sigma 10-20mm and am very happy with it and certainly recommend one...

I've got the Canon 10-22mm but if I was looking for a ultrawide lens to start with I would just get the 10-18mm.

These lenses pretty much get used at their widest most of the time in my experience so you don't miss much by not having 18-20mm and you've got your kit lens if you really want it.

I'm not aware of any decent primes to get the same ultra wide shots with for an APS-C camera which is why I just have the Canon 10-22mm (and this was purchased before the 10-18mm was released)

The 10-22 is better than the 10-18 for stills, but more expensive of course. For video, the 10-18 has the edge due to its STM focus motor, but the 10-22 has the fast and smoother USM motor but that doesn't AF on video...

Don't forget the IS in the 10-18mm which is also very nice for video and for stills :) makes very little difference for landscapes I guess since most people will have it on a tripod but it's still nice to have it

I own the 10-22 and the 11-16. I also have a friend upstairs who has a 10-20 that I can use anytime. Of the three the 10-22 is easily the best.

The 10-20 suffers from bad decentering (which is probably a ubiquitous fault with that model, although it does seem fairly common.

Image quality of the 10-22 and 11-16 are fairly smilar. Sharpness and colour are similar. The Tokina does suffer slightly worse chromatic aberration. Where the Tokina really fails though is with flare. Put the Sun anywhere near the edge of the frame and you'll get horrible flare. The 10-22 OTOH is one of the most flare-resistant lenses ever!

Why do I keep the 11-16? Purely because f2.8 is really, really useful when shooting astro wide-field. Any other time and f2.8 offers miniscule advantages over f3.5

I've not tried the 10-18. From what I've seen its flare handling is somewhere between the 10-20 and the 11-16.

Great help Thanks guys. I forgot to mention I'll be doing star/night photography too so the large aperture would be appealing.

Does anyone shoot astro at f4 just out of interest?

And I presume that's the Tokina 11-16 f2.8?

Check out the 10-22 lens sample thread on PotN - LINK - and look for images by NCHANT for stunning astro shots done with a 10-22.

I just got a tokina 11-16 f2.8 with hoya uv filter for 215£ delivered from ebay and it seems to be the normal price to pay for it. I haven't receive it yet so I can't comment on it but my main reason to buy was for star/night photography as you intend to. I was also looking at the Samyang 10mm f2.8 but review don't give it any advantage compare to the zoom.
The 10-22 is more versatile but also slower and more expensive so I decided to go for the cheap, nearly as good and fitting better my need (astro-photo).

Why did they send you a UV filter?

Sorry if this was not clear, it was just to give an idea of the price of these second hand on ebay. The one I got came with a filter so without a filter it might be possible to get it a little cheaper. UV filter are pointless for astro-photo...

That seems like a fair price for the 11-16 2.8. I've been keeping my eye on eBay and the classifieds, bit some go for £250 upwards. Be interested to see what you think of it, please post back first impressions (and your astro shots! ).

Ok I'll try but it's mainly for northern light so it might not happen that soon! You can check this link bellow, the bidding ended at 215 and the reserved priced wasn't achieved but I received a "second chance" offer for 235£ on it. Might be worth checking with the seller if the lens is gone. But keep an eye some are really going for much less than 250.

Edit:
Actually just check it's back on sale, finishes in 2 days.
