Here using a Nikkor 50mm F1.8 I used two aperatures to learn more about depth of focus....

1. F1.8, Aperature wide open.

Who prefers which and why?

No2 for me, My eyes are drawn to the oof background rather than the benches in no1. But, i like the composition. Whitby is my home town so i do have a soft spot for it lol. Btw im very new to photography so its just my personal preference and not a critique

In this instance yes I agree number 2 is better, but perhaps with a lower POV a shallower DOF may be more appropriate?

if number one had set the focus point as the lamp in the middle ground rather than the benches it may of worked, but even then still no 2 for me!

There's not really any subject and they aren't really landscapes

If its purely a DOF exercise you'd be better with a line of something to focus on
