ETA: What I've been trying to do is recreate some of the images / effects in the book "On This Earth: Photographs from East Africa" by Nick Brandt (it's on Amazon).
He uses selective focusing and graduations a lot in his B+W only book, which I think really work for this type of image, especially elephants where the texture of the skin is lost in a colour image.
Agreed. The second shot (non turned heads) is fantastic. Maybe a slightly tighter crop, to remove the black mark in the top left though. Black and white really works too as i imaging the grasses are quite a bland colour this time of year anyway.
