Can anyone recommend a good and if possible free antivirus program for an android phone?

I take it phones are the same as a PC and open to viruses or malware?

I use Kasperky on my phone and AVG free on my tablet.
Kaspersky was free from the Bank for PC and phone but does not work on my android phone so I use AVG on that.
AVG is you don't mind the adds

They are open to virus and malware attack but probably not as much as a computer.

For what it is worth I have been using Android phones for 8 years and not one of them have had antivirus apps on them and not one of them have been attacked by a virus or malware.
Thats not to say i'm invisible from attack but if you are careful in how you use your phone (dont side load any old APK file for example) then you stand a good chance of not being caught out and having to rely on apps to assist you.

Only asking as I downloaded an app from the play store, think it was editor recommend and when playing it, for some reason my chrome browser launched saying my phone had a virus on it and I need to download something. Took a while to get chrome to shut the page as it just kept reloading when I hit the cancel button so I could access the tab pages button to close that page.

Might download AVG and see if it finds anything.

I think that's more likely to be a malicious web page - trying to get you to download something dodgy - than an indicator that you actually have downloaded something dodgy.

The problem is that when you google to find a website you can pretty much guarantee that most of the links at the top of the google list are redirectors, they divert your request to go directly to website A and you are taken to multiple other websites (very quickly in the background) before your chosen website has loaded in the browser.
