Ever make a rip roaring buffoon of yourself when buying new gear as a beginner?

Buying a Voigtlander Bessa R3M. Marvelling at it's 1:1 viewfinder. Head down to London on a train for the day. Load up my first roll of film and start getting to grips with zone focus and shooting with both eyes open. And the moment when, about 24 frames into the roll, looking at the lens. Well...

    Nikon D850 - Owners Thread

I already have a very serviceable D810. The thought of a second FF body was just too tempting. The Nikon winter discount together with Grays excellent pricing and service made the decision to buy a no brainer. Think this may well be my last (serious) camera purchase.

    Nikon D850 - Owners Thread

I've just bought one. Brand new. I have no shame.

    Beginner cameras

The best advice I can offer is, buy a cheap used 'entry level' DSLR with a kit zoom lens. Something like a Nikon D3300/D3400/D3500 series with a 18-55mm zoom (other makes are available). Spend some time learning the basics. Then perhaps, buy a 35mm,f/1.8 or alternatively, a longer zoom. Whatever...

    Any voightlander bessa R owners?

I've got a R3M with a 40mm Nokton. Lovely camera to use especially when you remember to take the lens cap off. Yes. I have made that mistake. More than once.

Does anyone still use cheap, compact P&S cameras?

I’m going to a friend’s birthday party this weekend. I’ve been agonising as to if I should take a camera but perhaps more so, which one. This revived thread has provided the answer. Thank you @BADGER.BRAD

    Window light

<pedant> To me, it looks like the camera has focused on the model’s right eye, which is closest to camera. This is even sharper. </pedant>

D810 Owners thread anything to do with the D810

From my experience, the autofocus isn’t “bad” on the D810, the real issue is learning how to breath when using using wide apertures at short focusing distances, A few millimetres of movement whilst you take the photo can result in twice as much change in the focus point on the subject when using...

D810 Owners thread anything to do with the D810

It might be that I’m lucky but one thing I’ve learned with this lens is that the depth of field at short distance is very small. The lack of VR on an F-mount is something I suspect makes people feel that this lens in somehow inferior. I use back button focusing and, when not using a tripod, at...

D810 Owners thread anything to do with the D810

It's a crackingly good lens. It's heavy but I tend to use it mainly on a tripod. Still can't justify 'upgrading' to a D850. Have shot it handheld and subsequently cropped photos from the 85mm/D810 and printed them at 20"x30" with no problems whatsoever. Since writing that post, I've settled upon...

Manual with auto ISO, who does this?

Make a decision to lower the shutter speed or increase the aperture size?

Manual with auto ISO, who does this?

It's got some (minor) limitations, but as long as you ensure your subject is properly lit, it's an absolute godsend.

Manual with auto ISO, who does this?

For me it's usually a toss up between manual with auto ISO or aperture priority with auto ISO and min shutter speed. The most useful feature I find on my Nikon is metering for highlights.

All things related to Apple phones & tablets

Strike all that. The hub I’d mentioned didn’t support power pass through but this one certainly does. Similar build quality but with a nicer braided cable rather that uPVC. All the same ports, etc. Paid about UKP23 after discount. USB C is proving to be a somewhat expensive learning ground...
