My (Nikkor) 70-200 f/2.8 is a great lens, but I'd never take it on holiday. I'm with frod - a premium compact is what I'd use, but if you're wedded to a dslr then a 10-24 or similar, and maybe something longer and slower (but lighter) if you've room.
