    Samoa

I'm too lazy to bother as they do need a lot of lightening, and that provides problems. Black lava with white water is a bit of a problem, particularly on sunny days. Next time I must catch some storm clouds

    Variable ISO sensor plane

I don't think it would require "artistic decisions". It is just dynamic range. The sensor may be able to see 12bits, but that can be translated to 20 bits in other bits of hardware.

    Variable ISO sensor plane

Makes sense. As far as I understand it, that's how the human eye works. The dynamic range for adjacent pixels (small groups of rod or cone cells) is around 10, or a little more than 3 stops, yet the DR of whole eye is much greater than 3.

    Samoa

Yep, lots of them but surprisingly difficult to get a good shot. They were cut wood and there was a lot of them, so they must have come from the deck of a ship. Unfortunately they were mostly on sand, so not good contrast.

A little bit from around the edge of Samoa. Much of the shore is protected by a fringing reef, but lava flows push into the sea on the southern shores, which gives some spectacular effects in rough weather. Carved coast Flotsum Mangroves Blowholes The washing machine

What Do You Do With Your Images?

I know what you mean about "no pay = no good". I have to force myself to ignore the fact that few people like some of my favourite photos and even fewer will pay for them. I'll still take that sort of thing at every opportunity I get.

What Do You Do With Your Images?

Thanks. I think it's a fascinating story and I can't really believe the luck I've had to be doing it. I know some people say that you make your own luck, but that is b******t. The still photos are at https://steveaxford.smugmug.com/ . There are a lot of them, probably far more than if I was...

    Enticing birds into a garden

Birds love trees, so your planting is the way you need to go. I come from a very different place (Australia) with different birds, but I would think that the rules are similar. Native trees are best as that's what the birds have evolved with and that's what they will like the best. Small...

    All the gear....

Spot on, and about something as trivial as exposure. Maybe she takes really good photos and every now and then gets confused about the techo stuff. 50 years back you had to be really good at all the things like exposure, because if it was wrong you didn't find out until you developed the...

The difference between still pictures and moving pictures?

I agree that some things are almost impossible to capture with a still photo but become possible with a moving picture. Some stories are very hard to tell without a time sequence. I think that the current trend in camera club comps to discourage long titles on still photos is unfortunate as it...

The difference between still pictures and moving pictures?

There has traditionally been a gulf between still and moving pictures. Last century this was partly due to the need for for a crew to produce a moving picture and still pictures could be managed by an individual. Moving pictures were also more difficult to construct in that they (ideally) had...

What Do You Do With Your Images?

Interesting answers. I suppose that I am a little different from the norm in this respect. By all practical measures I am now a professional photographer, though I still take a very amateur view of the world - if I don't think I'll enjoy it, then I won't do it. I started photography in the...

Can you claim to be a great photographer when using modern high tech gear ?

Well, art is communication and has intent, or at least that is my belief and is a common theme amongst those who reflect upon it (though not necessarily here). I was trying to demonstrate that we are all trying to communicate with what we post, and our avatar seemed an obvious choice. It does...

Can you claim to be a great photographer when using modern high tech gear ?

Probably a waste of time for both of us. I guess I assumed there was some intent around the photo you posted, even if it was a sub-conscious intent,

Can you claim to be a great photographer when using modern high tech gear ?

Really, the only photo you have of yourself? Well, let's look at that. Why did you assume that pose for the only photo of you? If you should go missing tomorrow, then this will be the photo that is used to recognise you. To some degree, this will be you. Perhaps you should take some more...
