Buying a first Camera, Advice?

Ok basically i'd like a camera for my birthday, i don't know to much about camera's at all but my price range is around £250 and i WOULD prefer a Digital SLR or Compact System Camera, new or used obviously in good condition. Anyone got any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
