Achieving pure white background with continuous lighting

Thank you both very much, two very insightful posts. This has got me thinking...would a carefully placed silver reflector help bounce light back into the scene, resulting in brighter whites? If so, would it be best to: A) Project light directly onto the background and the background bounce...

Achieving pure white background with continuous lighting

Hi there I take quite a few product shots at work but I'm struggling to get that crisp white background. Although I'm confident with Light Room and Photoshop, I'd feel happier getting it done correctly in camera. My set up is pretty basic...two continuous lights and a seamless backdrop. I...

    AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm Question

Thank you for all the replies so far. Very insightful to hear everyone's opinions. In all honesty, I'm still on the journey of finding my niche (which means I want to try different styles - whether it be portraits, wildlife, architecture, landscape etc). Of course, it could end up being that I...

    AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm Question

Brill, thanks for the advice. I should probably also factor in that in the (distant) future, there is a chance I'd upgrade to a FX sensor body, so having an FX version of this lens would mean omitting the need to buy new glass to suit, of course.

    AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm Question

I'm on a crop sensor (D3500). Currently using a 50mm f/1.8G AF-S prime but it's quite an intrusive lens for wildlife (as most people know - wildlife are off like a dart when you approach), so really need something where I can stand well back, compose and capture some nice shots from a distance...

    AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm Question

I'm currently looking to add a zoom lens to my collection. I've decided on the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300 mm. Edit: VR variant. As this is a version designed for DX sensor camera's, I was wondering if this would be a true 70-300mm or whether this would be at 1.5x when on the body? Also, if anyone...

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

Oh no! Contrary to what I thought; I just checked and my camera focus mode was actually set to was set to AF-A and AF Area mode was set to Auto. I guess this would explain why I had auto focussing issues when the lens was set to auto. EDIT: Here are the two images side by side (it appears...

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

Brill, very helpful. I think it's me confusing things not knowing the lingo yet! I could be wrong (without checking) I'm sure in my settings I have AF-S set, However, from here, on my lens: Clicking M/AF made my example photo focus on the background - I'm certain I was unable to set a focal...

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

I think there's been some breakdown of communication in this thread. Just to confirm, I shoot in full manual mode and also focus manually. I was just testing the auto focus (as a one off) based on the reply that stated: "Manual focus isn’t very reliable, especially at shallow DoF." I will...

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

I tried with auto focus at f1.8 but my lens was focusing on the background (causing severe blur on the subject. I couldn't figure out how to foreground focus on auto. Would this be down to being too close to the subject (the can)?

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

That sounds like good advice! As I look at that photo more, I can already see subtle things like the back of the table being swallowed up by the bokeh so hopefully I can get the hang of finding out where I need it to be fairly quick. Will definitely get back out in the garden tomorrow to shoot...

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

Thanks for all the advice. Okay, here is the image. I had to email it to myself and screenshot it so I apologise if it comes out extremely small. As a test, I grabbed the first thing I found (a can of deodorant...boring, I know!) AF wanted to focus on the background so in manual focus (no...

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

Thanks for the advice and comments on this. I have a sample image I'd like to upload and discuss (a very boring composition that I just shot as a test) but my file size is too large at 1.4mb (exported from LR). Could somebody please advise the best way to get this uploaded without losing...

Thanks everyone, the advice has definitely been taken on board. Looking forward to getting out to keep practicing with this lens!

Beginner Achieving Great Bokeh (but Subject is Blurred)

Thanks for the responses. Now I think about it, I think I may have forgotten to set my single focus point. If this was off target, I imagine this would cause the face to become out of focus? Also, I assume f1.8 is quite a 'danger zone' with the risk of hand shake?
