You could try something like the Yongnuo 622TX, this is a flash controller but has autofocus assist beams - there is no need to actually have a flash involved...
Edit - posted the same time as Graham above - I'm not a Nikon shooter so didn't know your camera has assist light!

Thanks Sammy - very interesting and great PS skill... I wonder if it has ever been done with an aircraft? I work at an airport, would be fun to give it a go!
Great shots Sammy - I would love to see a 'behind the scenes' shot showing the rig set up, or an unedited version of one of the shots above? I assume that the rig is attached to the car and is in the unedited image, but is removed in PS?

There is always an element of luck with light and weather when shooting landscapes. To get all the elements coming together at the same time and being there set up and ready is a reasonably rare...
