I did try thr 'P' setting which seems to respond as expected withthe settings changing if I point at different areas. - Thanks for the suggestion though as it was worth a try.
Thank you very much as I think that you hit on the problem, as I have set the AE bracketing to off and taken a few shots in the 'M' mode and the settings stayed the same. So will just need to figure out how to set up the bracketing prperly and reset those setting when finished. Thanks again for...
That is a possibility as a few days ago I was trying to figure out how to set up auto braketing so that the camera would take thre shots to let me try HDR but I did not quite manage to do this as I had expected.

I just took a photo there just now with the switch set on M and the shuuetter speed shanged staright after taking a photo.

Yes- I used the rotary switch on the top of the camera then used the thumbwheel and +/_ buttons to set speed and exposure but there was no guarntee that settings would stay the same before the shot.
