    Digital error

What has caused my photos to break up into a small number of cubist-like blocks? The effect is like a "Rubick's Square" (as distinct from a Rubick's Cube!). It has only ever happened a couple of times, from a SmartMedia card. Are the photos recoverable?

Early Day Motion started in Parliament regarding street photography

My MP (Michael Fallon) has apparently already taken action on this topic. I have reproduced below the text of the response he received from Tony McNulty (Home Office): I suggest that we all carry a copy of this letter in our camera cases, like a sort of talisman. Please let your MP...

    Erased storage card

Just to round this discussion off - unfortunately I have to report failure. Probably because I had already taken a couple of new photos before I realised my error. Thanks to all who offered help (and software). Moral of the story: Check before you format!

    Erased storage card

Steve, Thanks for the info. Grateful for a copy of the recovery software you mentioned. If you contact me I'll send an sae. Regards, Frank

    Erased storage card

Help! I've committed the cardinal sin of re-formatting a memory card before double checking that all photos had been transferred to disc. Is there any way of recovering the last few photos on the card having done this? The card in question is a 128 MB Smart Media card from a Fuji FinePix4800Z.

    Solar Eclipse Photography

Gents (no ladies?), Thanks for your advice and the helpful links. I've decided to buy an inexpensive 80 mm APO, which will give me plenty of enjoyment long after the eclipse has past. Now to spend the next few days searching for some sunshine to practice on (with an appropriate filter, of...

    Solar Eclipse Photography

Grateful for your collective wisdom. I'm travelling to Russia to see this year's total solar eclipse and would like to photograph the event with my Canon 40D. I estimate that I need an actual focal length of 500-600mm to register a reasonable image size. I don't currently have a long focus...

    Value for Money

Guys (and gals), Thanks for your replies. You have raised a couple of points over which there are clearly a range of opinions: 1) Is it perfectly possible to live without IS, given the greater sensitivity of CCD over film? 2) Is there a significant difference in quality (ie worth the extra...

    Value for Money

Greetings, I've just joined this forum as I'm about to take the plunge and buy a digital SLR (probably Canon 40D) to replace my trusty 35 year old Pentax ME outfit. In researching this it's become obvious that lenses are much heavier, and in real terms more expensive, than they used to be...

    Yet another new member

Greetings, I'm new to digital photography, but have owned a film SLR since before my children were born. It's obvious from that opening gambit that I do have questions, but I'll post them on the Cameras and Lenses section. PS I'm also computer challenged!
