broncolor's new weather generators not proving that popular :P

Came away with a feeling that it was not as good as previous, I have to say. Might give it a skip next year. Notably missing were profoto and elinchrom, among others. Nice to chat with our printing lab managers and hats off to the Canon cps manager who came up trumps for us. Or fill up...

balancing exposure off camera flash - ambient

I still miss thyristor flash. Such a shame it's disappeared. My metz was almost always bang on. My 283 was also very good. Only semi-modern gun i know that offers it is the Can 580exii. Edit - apparently, the 600ex-rt range of Canon flashes also offers it. Will even transfer ISO and lens...

Godox AD600 wit Sony Camera Not Firing at Times

The x1 and the x-pro ii (i think) have a single pin mode. Custom function 1 on on the x1 i believe. I use nikon x1 regularly on canons firing ad600bm models and it works fine with fewer, if any, misfires. Loss of ttl (no ttl on BM models anyway) and focus assist light is worth it for the more...

I fancy a mirrorless camera - but which one?

Only relevant for portraits, but your 85 will become the lens on mirror-less you always wish it were on dslr. Eye focus, no calibration... Feels like cheating. I willl never use a wide aperture lens on a dslr again.

    Lastolite HiLite Help

I have six of them The front material yellows with age and usage, like many softbox diffusers. Well known problem. Easy fix is a very pale blue gel on the flashes you use to illuminate it.

    Studio head upgrade?

Agreed But it's not cheaper if deciding later that you needed DC powered lights after all, even if only for one job, and having to buy again or rent. The AC adapter for the 600 / 1200 is excellent. The price difference between the qt to the ad 600 isn't that great either, mostly just the £100...

    Elinchrom Five?

You can indeed, but it's more an 'active-charger' for the battery rather than a mains adapter.

    Elinchrom Five?

Yes, the ad600 is a better, more versatile design. Especially so if you can only afford the one light. Thermal expansion of the socket perhaps? Something to keep an eye on.

    Elinchrom Five?

I was misinformed, it isn't ac/dc but dc with 'active charge'. So that's me out, as I much prefer an ac adapter to save the (£359) battery over time. Assuming this isn't a replacement for the mains only elc that is. https://www.elinchrom.com/product/elinchrom-five/

    Elinchrom Five?

I absolutely agree Scooter. I can perhaps forgive AC only, high powered monobloc heads as, if I'm near a plug socket, I can probably c stand and bag it. Still rather a pack and head though. Location, DC powered, pack and head lights are no longer made by some of the main players. Neither...

Photography Show 2022 17th-20th September at the NEC

When I were a lad going with my father, they used to have topless models which, for an impressionable adolescent, was quite eye opening. Anybody remember the adverts in the rags of the time that had a model getting slowly undressed in the weeks leading up to the show until she just had a...

    Elinchrom Five?

Yeah, perhaps 'five' hundred too expensive too. Have to say that the pack and head design of the elb500 has its merits over the all in one design du jour of the five. 680g or 3kg at the top of a stand in front of the talent, but the five is ac/dc apparently. Apparently, they have realised the...

Photography Show 2022 17th-20th September at the NEC

I run a school photography company and every school portrait taken since covid has been head and shoulders on a lastolite green background (either hi-lite bottletop or pop ups), giving parents choice of background for their child's pictures. Always shot secondary on lastolite green anyway, but...

Photography Show 2022 17th-20th September at the NEC

I saw that chroma lastolite bottle top, but it's for the 5x7 rather than the 6x7 standard. All my lasto 'parrot' green backgrounds give me an excellent key, much better than the more standard 'bottle' green.
