    have i overdone it?

I really like the first one, doesn't look overdone to me and I like the patterns radiating out from the hay bale. I'm not as keen on the second one, I think it would look better with either a longer shutter speed to smooth out the water a bit more, or a shorter shutter speed to freeze the...

    Refraction

Thanks for the comments! I agree about the droplets, I didn't notice them while taking the pictures, only on the computer screen later. I might have to have another go at some point!

any 1 use a 3rd party battery in there camera

Yep, have a couple for my 40d which seem better than the original (admittedly the original is quite old so will have degraded a fair bit since it was new). Not sure if they do them for your camera but have a look at the 7dayshop own brand batteries, as they seem to be regarded well and mine...

Linux for a beginner - Which distro

It's also possible to run Linux from a USB stick, which means you can just erase it and try another one on the same USB stick rather than needing several CD's. Google "pen drive linux" for some more info.

If you're looking to try it out cheaply there's some good advice in this thread on extension tubes, reverse mounted lenses and other methods: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=458133

    Upgrading laptop hard drive

So if I click on system image in windows backup that will copy the entire contents of the disk onto the external HD, and then I can restore everything from that when I've put the new drive in? Sorry for all of the questions, just wanted to make sure I understand what's going on.

    Upgrading laptop hard drive

Thanks for the quick replies, There should be plenty of space on the external drive. I've got the windows install CD's as well, but there are a few bits of software on it (PTC Creo, Matlab) that took a long time to download and install in the first place so if I could get away without doing...

    Upgrading laptop hard drive

It's a Dell Inspiron 1545, and the budget is as low as possible ideally! The laptop was only £350 a couple of years ago so it doesn't make sense spending lots to upgrade it. All of my photos/important files are backed up onto a 500GB external drive, and I'm running windows 7.

    Upgrading laptop hard drive

Hi everyone, Due partly to lots of photos, my laptop hard drive is getting pretty full. It's only a 160GB (and windows explorer displays it as having 134GB total capacity), so how easy would it be to put a bigger one in? I've seen a few bits of software for backing up the entire contents...

    Macro on the cheap

Did you try the 35mm in front of the 85/1.8? Would give you about 2.4x and the big aperture should make things nice and bright in the viewfinder. Probably best to try the 85 and 24-105 first though, as that much magnification does take a bit of getting used to!

    Macro on the cheap

Magnification is just the focal length of the lens on the camera divided by the focal length of the lens reversed in front (this assumes both lenses are focussed at infinity, but moving the focus rings doesn't seem to noticeably change the magnification for any of the lenses I've tried it with)...

    Macro on the cheap

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet, but by reversing one lens on the front of another you still have aperture control over the lens mounted on the camera. This means the viewfinder is nice and bright for composing your shot and it stops down when you press the shutter as normal. All of...

    Peak District

Padley Gorge near grindleford is good for waterfalls, and the above suggestions are all good too. Ladybower reservoir and derwent edge might be worth a visit too.
