Recommendations wanted! Flash for Canon 450D

Hi I am looking to buy a "proper" flash for my 450D. The Canon Speedlite 430exii was recommended to my by a friend. Just wondering if anyone else has good/bad experiences with this flash or if you have recommendations for alternatives in the same price range? Thanks in advance!
