Yes the zoom moves in and out, but it's a hand operated one not by a button. As far as I know it doesn't switch off in viewing mode (at least it hasn't yet), only when I'm trying to take a picture. I've noticed it's only a short tick when it won't turn on, but as it turns on the ticking noise...
