They have launched with EE as an exclusive. I imagine, they may expand to other carriers after the initial launch.

I think Google have a good chance. They do have a track record in this space with their Android operating system that is found in multiple smartphones and their previous line of Google Nexus phones. The main difference here is that they are moving upmarket into Apple territory.
