What I did Mike was put an Arca Swiss lens foot plate on it (I would have had to put one on anyway if using on my tripod) that makes it big enough to hold comfortably. You can pick up the lens plate for £10-£20 from Fleabay
Not really a big problem but the tripod foot is too small. I like to hold the lens by the foot. I've read that some find the manual focus ring too narrow but I have piano fingers and it's perfect for me.

Well John, there's a few ways. I was using a Joby hand tether (BR do one too). That's good if anyone tried to steal your stuff or you are in crowds (I was in Disneyland) and you think someone will knock into you.

It is supposed to stop it slipping as much, which it does to an extent. I used mine all the time when I went on holiday and it made a big difference. I added a tether to mine for extra protection because I never totally trust any straps.
If you are looking for a really good strap then I would recommend the Black Rapid Sport. It has the additional underarm connector which makes a difference.
