The few times I may really need the f2.8 capabilities are gig shooting (low light) so the few stops of the 28-300 3.5 was better (ok, i know minimal!) than the f4.5 of the 70-300....

Suggs, looked at your shots, crystal sharp compared to mine! its interesting, I was watching a few Pro Sports togs there who all had twin speedlight set up's, weather in the woods or out in the open. Like you say though, maybe they had dropped the scene...
Took my camera to Round 1 of the British Downhill Series on Sunday.
First time i've ever shot a race and I also only had limited kit (D5000 plus a 35mm f1.8 prime and an SB700)
Obviously limited to 1/200 due to flash sync so was using my flash to assist with the fast pace. Learnt alot...
