ISO - Waste of time when shooting RAW?

Me too. I figure that ISO is the setting that has the least effect on the image I am trying to capture. By putting it in Auto, I can concentrate on shutter-speed and aperture, which do make a difference to the image. Sure, in low light, to minimise grain, I'll be conscious of the ISO and not use...

A quick review of the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head (with pictures).

14 degrees fahrenheit is 18 degrees fahrenheit below freezing. That's about 9-10 degrees Celsius below freezing. But not -36C, for sure.

A quick review of the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head (with pictures).

That's excellent. I have sometimes provided unsolicited feedback on design and quality aspects of products I have purchased (not photography related), and it is interesting to experience the wide range of responses from the manufacturers.

    Advice please... what's going wrong?

Yep, also my thoughts. The clue is in the pavement focus. Looks sharpest just in front. But to my eye the image is acceptable in-focus for computer viewing or small prints.

    Advice please... what's going wrong?

Looks OK to me. The child's face is in shade and low contrast (as well as a bit underexposed), so doesn't jump out as super sharp, but the focus point looks about right (but possibly not perfect). At f4 the trees behind are blurred just as I would expect them to be. If you wanted then in focus...

So who is getting the new Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head?....

I'm with you on this. I can't ever see that I'd hold onto that lever. I can't fault my Wimberly (which was, admittedly, "silly money" - but about the same price as the gitzo), so won't be looking at this.

Equipment choice and Kenko Teleconverter confusion

I found my 400mm prime to be very useful indeed in the Galapagos. Essential? No. But useful. Pro tip. Beware of the tight luggage restrictions on the flight from the mainland to the islands. Plan to carry-on ALL your photography gear, even if it means you or your travelling partner(s) checking...

    Which Camera - Everest Trek

For the cold, plan to be able to carry your batteries at least inside of your clothing and sleeping bag for the worst of it. Years ago I spent many a night cuddling the battery pack of my F5 in the Andes. Awoke one morning to find the F5 body covered in 1-2mm of frozen condensation from the...

GIMP suddenly stopped letting me "Export" my photos

100% This. Opening, editing and then saving a jpeg repeatedly will degrade the image with every iteration. Non-destructive editing, save only lossless file types until you're finished, or always start from the original file and have another go at it. (I find having a second or third go from...

    Critique Italian Dolomites

Opps. I was referring to flare in 3 and 5, not in 2. Sorry for not being more clear.

Just lovely. #2 is the one for me. (Could you have avoided the flare in a couple of the with a lens hood?)

    Flat skies...

Agree. Having said that, I crop pretty much all my images for one reason or another.
