Once my bank account recovers i will be looking for a bag for the Nikon 600mm f4. In the past i had the Lenstrekker AW 600 which i used for my 500mm however i sold that even though it was a very good bag. So now im looking at what options are available to fit the 600 with camera attached...I would like a few options to give me the best chance of finding the bag which suits me best.Thanks...

Hello Mark,

I've used a Tamrac Expedition 9x and a Lowepro 600AW with the 600mm f/4 - both fit it perfectly, but not with the body attached. I'm not sure a bag exists which will fit the 600 with a body. Could be wrong though, but I could never find one...

If you're interested, the 9x is surplus to requirements.

Cheers,

Jez.

There is this Kata bag that takes a 600 + body (allegedly) but it is pricey though.

You may want something neater but there is always the Moose Peterson bag from USA. It can be seen here.

The new larger Flipside 500AW might, but you would ned to check out the dimensions

I have this bag

If you want to measure the size of your 600 with body attached I'll check if it will fit.

I use the 600aw (latest shape) when out and about normally. If I need to take more lenses/bodies I have one of the now unavailable rouse bags, which is great but not the most comfortable.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will keep looking into this as i have plenty of time. Has anyobe tried to travel by plane with a 600mm in a bag? I would like a bag which can go in cabin luggauge with me.
Ian Cook says his Canon version could not go cabin luggage, the main reason he says he should have gone for the 500 mate.

I use an alternative bag now that I have sold my Kata bag, home made cheaper version than main stream bags, but it suits me better.

I use the Lowepro 600AW, if you do not use the 2nd section of hood then the lens will fit fine with body attached and also with a TC attached.

The 2nd hood section seems like overkill to me anyway, I have not seen any issues with flare by omitting this....

I have both the new and old 600aws, the 600mm with the hoods reversed does not fit with a body on it from what I remember (hence why I got the newer one) I thought both models were too big to go as hand luggage though I have seen someone airside at the airport with one once.

Mark, Tenba do a couple of long lens cases, a 400 and this 600 LINK, not cheap but I rate their bags as some of the best available.

However I would have thought it would fit in the Lowepro 600AWII that you had.

Thanks folks. Martyn i sold the AW600 when i sold my 500f4 as i didnt want it sitting around for a while. That Tenba looks good so i will look at sizes etc for travel with it.

They do a 400 2.8 as well, on the same site ... may be worth checking the sizes, I was looking at getting one a few years back but the UK stockist at that time did not have any.

MCL the site linked are now the main stockist for Tenba bags, and they are really helpful.

the lightware is too big for hand luggage too if what you've written is correct?

I have added the Kinesis to the list. The L522 is very close to what i want. Its aprox 3cm to tall but this is unlikely to get picked up at an airport and if that worries you then try and find an L521 which is the exact length to get on a plane but you struggle to get your body attached within the bag.

Onlyissue is having to buy the seperate backpack style harness to allow the case to be carried like a normal backpack....Im getting closer...

I use the ThinkTank Photo Airport International V2 which I reviewed here (including video review).

Perfect for air travel but requires the hood being stored in suitcase.[/QUOTE

Thanks Richard, i have added the bag you mention with the others to keep them all together. Great review you gave.

First you need to check out the airlines they are all using different bag sizes and weight allowance. Easy jet is pretty good with their allowances.
Cabin baggage must be no larger than:
• 56cm (22”) x 45cm (17.7”) x 25cm (10”).
Size gauges are situated in all check-in areas.
No weight limit for hand lugguage.

I use one of these when im traveling

My Canon 600mm goes in with the hood reversed but will not take the lens cover the bag is well padded so you can get away with it but i have made my own cover just in case i can also get the 300mm f2.8 in plus a couple of bodies and tele convertors and a small zoom. This was the only bag i could find that met my requirements

Richard
