Creative Football Photos?

Hi all - I'm not the most creative of photographers but one of my goals for the rest of the season is to get a lot more creative, producing something a little different from the usual goal celebration and stock type shots.

These are my first attempts (yeah I know I need to try harder!)

Any of you got any other more creative type shots you'd like to share? I do like the type of shots where you have a player running with the face sharp and arms and legs with motion blur - haven't had the courage to try that one yet though!

Why not post the pics instead of links?

Football League, Dataco. Liking those, I need to think more creatively!

A couple of interesting pictures, I am guessing its a question of supply and demand as to creative pictures.

I would of thought that not many newspaper's are going to pay for creative pictures and so the press togs are not going to produce pictures that will not sell.

I like the occasional arty pan (usually by accident) - also like a player isolated in a beam of light between shadows too

Japanese photographer Ryu Voelkel, (who used to shoot in Scotland a lot) has made a nice niche for himself with it https://www.flickr.com/photos/ryusha/

As Photodiva said - shot under an agency's license and subject to DataCo so can only post links

Totally agree Mark, which is why I've concentrated on the standard footballer kicks/heads ball into net and celebration shots in the past - just want a bit of variety and also helps the portfolio! I guess I'm thinking more about what would be attractive to the magazine market more than press now.

Thanks David - will definitely take a look. I've seen a couple of shots with nice panning before so need to give that a go. I think I'm too worried about changing settings and missing a key point of a game but I need to give this a go. I'd like to also try using 2nd curtain flash to have a sharp player running down the wing with a blurred trail behind but clearly couldn't do that at a league game!

You can assign one of the rear buttons on your 1DX to change shooting parameters (you can also do it on the 7DII but not quite as well).

For example I have mine set so that I'm usually in AV/M mode but by holding down the AF-on button it switches to TV mode at 1/100th with the AF parameters set differently so I can try for a panning shot. Let go of the button and it instantly goes back to my normal settings. It even changes during a burst.

Good point!! I've currently got it set up for when I do Manager shots, across the pitch so I shoot those on Tv 1/200 auto ISO. I'll try this so I can switch quickly to panning shots. Cheers Scott.

I don't set out to do any but always keep my eye open... Got this last sunday .. indoor football pitch in glasgow.. sign on walll just frames nicely :)

If you're going to do slow shutter panning shots, the face(s) has to be in focus, otherwise throw it away

Says who? - we're talking creative stuff/messing around for our own amusement here - not technically excellent stuff

Anyone can put a slow shutter speed and wave it around as players run around, doesn't mean it's any good. Especially if you're stood up when taking the photo.

The sports critique board needs to decide what it wants to be, a place where people can get constructive criticism or a place to pat you on the back and say job well done, even if it wasn't.

I'm not asking for a pat on the back - read my post with the pic - it says it was an accident. and I posted it in response to tophatter's similar pic .

I think you need to be able to carve out free time to be creative doing footy stuff, the emphasis is so much on goals and celes usually. It's difficult to see different things with your eye glued to the camera all of the time.
At the top level there is one guy I know who works for an agency that seems to embrace creative/quirky stuff more than most. Check out the work of Simon Stacpoole (and others) of the Offside agency http://welloffside.photoshelter.com/#!/index

I'd love to see a panning slide tackle - would need to be staged, but that'd be fab

Here's a few from yesterday. Buxton v Nantwich Town 3-1. Just a bit of messing about.
