Hi all

As mentioned elsewhere a late to the party upgraded :)

I got my ISO a burned a DVD and starts well, I started twice as the default install setting of download updates it just hung so tried again with 'not now' so WU under W10 will get them

However as per title the install fails with the oh so helpful "something happened" when it gets to 33%

All help and insight welcome..........as time is running out ;)

FWIW and bearing in mind other folk here at TP have successfully installed W10.

Have most if not all such users made use of the Media Creation Tool if so did they use English (UK) or English (American)???

The reason I ask is that some reports of the failure refer to "localisation issues" (saying to overcome the install failure change all the PC locale setting to US from GB) therefore as I had downloaded the ISO from the MS TechBench I chose English but noted there is English(International)................some Googling suggests that the latter is in fact English (GB) so I am downloading another ISO to give that a go. Hopefully that will work........???

Otherwise at a loss until some other folk can throw some light on the matter :)

It is not supposed to be this hard :(

Right, now I am stumped???

I burned the English International installer to DVD and tried that installer and it also failed at 33% :(

All quite odd, so revert to plan B and forget about W10 for now and just cope with the WU idiocyncrasies I experience with W7 ~ heh ho!

Edit ~ I wanted to check the "countdown clock" on the W10 upgrade again here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-upgrade to try one last time using the Media Creation Tool and found there was a new tool obtained by the 'Upgrade' button

Bearing in mind I last grabbed the media creation tool on the 27th July this surprised me and nowhere have I read that the tool had changed??? It was called Windows10upgrade9194 . exe from the 'Upgrade for free' button.

I downloaded and ran it and does a compatibility check which my PC passed the 3 stated critera CPU, Disk Space and for the life of me I cannot recall what the third said!

It is currently at 30% download far quicker than the ISO download :)

But bearing in mind the "countdown clock" says 37mins and falling to upgrade for free I can only surmise that this is the time to get the 'Upgrade for free' tool not a deadline to use the download especially as the GUI said something like you upgrade at any you like.

PS Edit ~ whilst I was typing this post the "Windows Upgrade Assistant" disappeared.............oh b***er I thought not another MS failure. Well thinking I would rerun it I get a message that it 'already running' so something going on in the background perhaps positively :) It would be nice if the GUI window stayed open to keep you informed!

Oddly (there's a surprise) there is nothing in Task Manager to show that it is running and indeed anything other than the browser running???

Though router internet light flashing like a good un and all four i5 cores busy.

Windows 10 upgrade need certain windows updates to be installed to the computer being upgraded. If you had previous problems with windows update resolve those first.

Hi

It was my understanding that even(?) with a a possibly flakey W7 WU it was logical/possible to install W10???

However the Upgrade Assistant failed with an error code 0x80070057 and clicking on 'try again' eventually got me to a screen requiring the Product Key........................so having failed to install the free upgrade just before/around the cutoff time the Upgrade assistant now appears to work but not to install the free 'version'.

So it is back to Plan B of wait till new build time :)

Neil

Other than reinstalling various software including Adobe, no  but as I now now 'after' the free upgrade date this is moot as if I do get W10 to install I will be paying the market rate ;)

Interestingly I checked the W7 WU and singly selected one of the .Net updates 3.5.1 I think it was and it installed immediately i.e. it had downloaded (Note - I have the setting as download as required) but none of the other 11 will download.

So perhaps as part of the failed W10 install that update was downloaded?

If you can please remind me about the WU log file windowsupdates.txt as I want to see what it shows as possible reason for W7 WU not doing its job?
