Any video experts on here? I have a quick question regarding my own presets, and wondering if they're a little "overkill" compared to some of Adobe's presets.

What settings are you using? Something like their DPP output will be overkill.

So, here are the settings (my settings will be in brackets)

Adobe Preset - YouTube 1080p HD

Level: 4.2 | (5.1)
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 1 pass | (VBR, 2 pass)
Target Bitrate: 16 | (20)
Max Bitrate: 16 | (25)

Adobe Preset - YouTube 2160p 4K

Level: 5.2 | (5.1)
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 1 pass | (VBR, 2 pass)
Target Bitrate: 40 | (60)
Max Bitrate: 40 | (60)

TBH, my settings are a slight copy of someone else's that I saw online. I also have a 2.7k preset, but Adobe doesn't have one for YouTube 2.7, so nothing to compare against. That's basically with the bitrates set halfway between that of 1080p and 2160p.

I guess what I really need to know is, is my bitrate too high? From everything I have read, having the VBR 2 Pass is a must.

Bitrates are fine provided you have the storage and upload speed. YouTube re-encode anyway so the higher the better.

I'd need to check which levels are appropriate, that's determined by the uncompressed data rate. I don't think you need 5.1 for HD, but dropping to 5.1 for UHD may limit you to 30fps.

I usually upload at 30fps anyway (think a couple of vids were 60fps, more so in error).

The bitrate makes a huge difference to the file size, my ADSL upload speed is only 373kb so I do 1080p with target 12 and 4K with target 25 because anything much over 1GB is unrealistic for overnight uploading.
For youtube this still looks pretty good with minimal blocky artefacts though they muck about with it some more which sometimes creates artefacts in dark areas or fast moving scenes.

It always looks wrong to me to have target and max the same so I usually add 5 onto that so it can peak a bit more where needed(?)

I'm fortunate that upload speed isn't too much of an issue. In fact, it's the export time that takes ages, so I leave it overnight.

My 500MB NYC video took just a few minutes to upload, but the Premiere Pro export said over 4hrs (I left it overnight so no idea how long it actually took)

You can edit almost everything and save it as a new profile, your new profile is also available in Media Encoder which I find usually a bit faster - plus it allows you to edit another sequence while first one is encoding.

Apologies, I meant H.264/ AVC Profile. Going from Main Profile to High or High10 Profile would give you better results for the same bitrate as it gives you more encoding tools.
