I am looking to get either a 500mm mk 1 or 2 or 600mm mk 1 for wildlife photography mainly birds , the bodies i use are 7dmk ii and 1dx v1 , i would be using 1.4xiii extender as well with either . can anyone give me there reviews and pros and cons of these lenses if possible please . many thanks

500mm is lighter and mk2 is even lighter, 600mm mk1 IS is remarkably heavy.

600mm is a massive lens

Think about lugging the lenses around and walk on uneven terrain for miles back and forth. Are you prepared to lug this all day?

You'll require a bigger camera bag for 600mm

Travel internationally with 600mm could be an issue with the weight and bag size (depending on which country you are travelling to)

Potential spending more on a good set of tripods and gimbal head

I think 500mm has better resell value and more popular among wildlife

Both are equally sharp and takes TC very well.

That said my next telephoto lens would be 600mm

Robin has pretty much nailed the answers, both superb lenses, apart for the obvious focal length differences the biggest issue is the weight.

The 600mm is firmly a tripod lens for everybody other than Geoff Capes, whilst the 500mm is hand-holdable for a lot of people with proper technique and reasonable strength making it a much better lens for shooting birds in flight, or being on the move around a field.

I used to have the 600mm mark 1 and as Robin has pointed out, its a beast of a lens, ridiculously heavy and a pain to travel with..
I now have the mk2 version, still a big lens to lug about but quite a bit lighter.. I personally love the compression the 6 gives, it can be too much lens in some circumstances, but for birds I wouldn't have anything else..

Wot he said - I’ve got a Mki 500mm and as much as the reach of a 600 might be nice my body wouldn’t thank me! I had a Sigma 300-800mm and found it unusable due to its weight, I guess I’d find a 600mm the same...
