It was a real shame COVID kicked the Bempton meet into touch, but nonetheless I've gone up for a day or 2. True to form, todays boat trip was cancelled due to the water forecast, still waiting to hear about tomorrow.

Here's a couple from yesterday - edited on the laptop, hopefully they're somewhere close to what they should look like, they'll be done properly once I'm home and not bored in.a B&B room!

At least I got some nice light last night

Great to see, I feel quite envious as it's one of my favourite locations ... hope it works out for you tomorrow. :)

Just got the call - boat trip cancelled again (n)

Looks like I'm off home a day early!

Thanks for commenting
Oh dear, what a disappointment! :(

Shame about your trip! :-(

Photos look great though! LOOVE the first portrait, lush rim light ;-)

I’ve never been here before, but have thought about it a few times. Would it be ok to ask a few questions?
Which time of day is best?
Which focal length works best here?

Cheers

Cheers for commenting pal, getting towards the end of the season now, the auks have all but gone but still no shortage of gannets.

I'm not a fan of the mornings unless there is cloud cover, you spend a lot of time with the sun in your face.

For me, 6pm onwards on a sunny evening is tough to beat. The wind direction will determine where I go.

For gear 500mm on a full frame and upwards is best, although the spot im stood on now, giving my arm a rest (!), will give full frame fly pasts with about a 300mm

All excellent shots,Mike and the third one is particularly striking.

Good detailed shots Mike but for the novelty factor, 1st for me (y)

Whats the reason for cancellation? Thought the forecast didn't look too bad today

Cracking shots Mike, 1st for me too, looks like a movie poster for Apocalypse Bempton

Thanks for all the info fella. I've never photographed gannets so I might give it a try!

500mm full frame is good for me as will be 300ish mm when new lens combo comes ;-)

How unlucky, what is causing the issue?

Great shots.

Steve just said the skipper thought the conditions were too poor, a mix of wind direction and swell I think. To my untrained eye, Monday didn't look too bad, but I don't know the size of the boat, and you have to bow to a skippers knowledge of the sea. They must be losing money by cancelling, so it can't be a decision taken lightly.

I think that is an accurate analysis. As you say, he is the expert and he would want to make his living. I often feel as a landlubber that its hard to appreciate the swell of the sea unless you have experience. I come from the Fylde coast where the sea at low tide can be so far away as to indiscernible but I was at Bempton last Thursday and the sheer scale and power of the sea was noticeable, even though just a mildly breezy day. But what a lovely place to be[emoji106]
