This may be a dumb question, but I've just installed Whatsapp on my laptop. I'd assumed the whole, wide, wonderful world of Whatsapp would be laid before me, so I was a little bit disappointed to find it limited to people I am already in contact with. How do I go about finding a person, who I know to be on there, and make contact?
 
Don’t know on a laptop but on a phone just create a new chat and it will show all your contacts and who uses WhatsApp. It’s more like a messaging rather than social media but you can create groups for family or friends for example
 
I think it's much the same. It's linked to my phone, in any case. I assume then, that if you want to contact a person outside your contacts you would need a phone number, or such like?
 
It works on the laptop just like on the phone. So, you're right, if you want a person outside your contacts then you need their number.
 
Try a close relative to start with. We use Whats App in our Camera Club for keeping touch in smaller Groups. Useful for planning outings etc. We also have several sub-groups in the club.

Thanks. I imagined that would have to be the case. That'll teach me not to listen to people talking about how great it is. :p

I can see it would be very useful for that. I'll try it with a non FB friend.
 
watsapp is brilliant
but you need to add the contacts phone number and then they are available to message

the best thing about it is they can be anywhere in the world just add the number with correct code and its all good

i used it recently a lot for work chat which was very good
 
It's great for groups, our road has one but for little else. It's not Facebook thank God.
 
Whatsapp is owned by Facebook and is pretty much Facebook Messenger under the hood.
 
You can also forms groups on other message apps like iMessage, FB Messenger and Signal
 
I used it in hospital when there was WiFi but no cellular signal so you not make phone calls and my DiL uses it to keep in touch with relatives in Uganda and friends in Europe
The best bit its free and does not use data

i talk to my uncle in Oz he is a retired Karai teacher the quality also now over whatsapp is superb

Surprised by this! I thought it used data but not texts/calls... Ah, maybe you mean it can go over t'internet rather than mobile data?
