The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I think it will be the photo show that's on from today till Tuesday.

It is at the show, I had a play with it on my camera today. Can't comment on picture quality as I haven't seen the images on the computer but it is much smalller than and thought, quite light and well balanced.

Also had a play with the A9 iii, although not something I will get the autofocus seemed noticably better than the A1...

I asked the Sony rep when we may see the promised firmware for the A1, he had no idea (din't expect him to).

In what way was AF better? I must admit, AF speeds are so fast now I struggle to see the difference unless I’m trying cameras side by side, even then I’m not sure I’d be able to see a noticeable difference unless I’m out in the field doing something demanding.

I certainly didn’t see anything noticeably different in AF speed or acquisition moving from the A9ii to A1, only on reviewing images did it become apparent (y)

I find it frustrating that products and firmware etc are announced months before they’re released, just develop it and tell us when it’s ready

I realised later I shouldn’t have said autofocus but subject/eye detection. Was just testing it in the crowded show hall, but it certainly felt that the A9iii found/locked onto the subjects quicker. The A9iii would go from say finding a head to eye of someone side facing almost instantly where the A1 would take longer. It wasn’t something I expected but was something I noticed. I guess it’s the AI whatever it’s called in the A9iii.

A7CII has the A.I autofocus as well. Not sure if it’s emperors new clothes or not but the eye a.f does seem to me to be slightly snappier compared to the A7IV and A9, Can’t compare to the A1 as I don’t have one.

I am also using the A7CII with very basic glass so the newer a.f has impressed me.

Sounds impressive. I find the A1 instant, however there have been some occasions where it's been fooled and thought that something else was an eye. Bizarelly on this shot it thought the camera was an eye and I had to change from wide with eye-AF tracking to single point with eye-AF tracking and position the focus point on the eye and then recompose, very odd

It also thinks Betty's ears are her eyes, but every camera I've had with eye AF has doen that so it's probably just her

Did you find the A9iii to start feeling warm on the left side during normal shooting?

The A1 gets warm during shooting indoors (I've never noticed it outdoors), I queried this when I first got it and it's normal. With the processing power of the A9iii it wouldn't surprise me if that gets warm too.

I found the a9iii to be virtually noise free at iso 2500, closely followed by the A6700, A1, and finally the A7r5 which was a mess.

Edited due to site loading post before I'd finished

Interesting, I don't think any camera is noise free at iso 2500 tbh. This also suggests that the A9iii isn't quite as good as the A1 or A7RV in noise handling, although we're being spoilt these days as they're all stellar.

At these shows its always a pain to reset the cameras, especially the eye tracking modes.

I went to the show today, met up with Jonny for a bit. Didn’t get anything substantial, they didn’t have the new Godox trigger I wanted but I did find the perfect medium size backpack by Tenba Fulton v2 14L that can fit under the seat in an airplane.

Tried the A9III, dead impressed, the AF, the EVF, the FPS, and that write speed is insane. Just insane amount of tech in a body. The flip screen is rather chunky though, very thick.

X100VI was nice but didn’t used it much since it was set up weirdly, none of the buttons does the thing I would set up mine so it felt alien to use. The AF was quick enough.

Canon R3, eye auto focus tracking was strange. It’s a circle that moves. Around but it was way off for me as I wear glasses. When I look dead center it is to the left of the screen by 20% of coverage. The AF was good though and the body still feel dead at home after so long since I had a 5D4. Interestingly, they had loads of 5D4 on display to try too.

Nikon Zf, don’t like the button layout, no joystick, only a d-pad. Also notice all the Zf on display had a smallrig grip attached some reason.

Some excellent deals, Fuji XT5 is £1299. A74 for £1699, A73 for £1299. LCE has the best deals, £300 off the A9III that nobody has any discounts on.

Also by chance was walking past Canon stand when a woman was giving a talk about shooting pregnancy and she was so impressive that after 5 mins outside lingering I went and sat down and listened to the rest of it. She charges £10k for a 6hr shoot and she only has been doing it for 6 years.

I never heard of her until today. Her instagram says she is Forbes’ 100 most successful women 2023.

That’s about right there is a programme in the states that all the portrait shooters at that money follow ran by Megan DiPierro. She teaches how to generate a 20k average per session. it’s called rise to the top. It works better in the states although there are a quite a few in the U.K on the programme as well. I know a girl on it who is averaging 20k a session.

Some reason I didn’t take a photo of the list but only this and it’s only part of it. I feel like some of these prices makes it worthwhile to visit once a year if you can wait. This isn’t LCE though.

I went Saturday. The 300mm “show deal” was that it was available at the show!! No money off it.

Had a play - it’s really light and compact. Defo my next big purchase.

It feels a little down from sat highs. Tuesday afternoon is really when you should be going round the stores to maximise the savings, presuming enough stock

Bonkers

It’s the photography equivalent of Andrew Tates war room. Exactly like the war room, if you are able to follow all the very exact rules you will make serious money. Some in the states are making millions.

I have a copy of the full programme but it takes a certain type of person to be able to follow it religiously and I couldn’t do it. I also don’t enjoy that type of photography.

Nothing in the world is ever really new though and it’s basically an enhanced version of what David Campbell (the founder of Venture photography) did back in the day.

I don't blame the people charging it, I blame the people paying it, clearly more money than sense imo.

They are selling more than photos but an experience.

Things she talked about are.

1 - Have an assistant, let the assistant open the door for them, make them coffee/tea. There is a hierarchy in the roles, so you are seen as more important.
2 - Provides make up artist, wardrobe, silk robes, fluffy slippers, glass of champagne etc. Like you are going to a spa day or a salon. The whole experience is relaxed and comfortable.
3 - Nothing is rushed, breaks in between (since they are pregnant after all).

She only provide digital copies with 1 wall print 60cmx40cm, and so the client will inevitably put it up on the wall in the house and when their friends come see the baby. Which they often will, the print will act as an advertisement for her as they will ask "who took this?". I thought this was smart.

The thing to remember is that £10,000 to some people are pocket change, there is always going to be rich people and there are also people who thinks that you only get value at certain price point, I mean we all do to an extent on certain things, from cereals to clothing to tripods or even hotels etc. They just see it with photography too.

Apart from not being preggers this is exactly the experience a former GF of mine had. She loved it all and was really proud of the pictures and they were something that none of her mates had, they were well done but IMO not exceptional and TBH I've seen better here. I was shocked at the cost but this was maybe 25 years ago, I suppose the experience + photography approach isn't something new.

As I said, more money than sense ;)

Taken straight from Rise to the top :)

There is a lot more to it than that of course, the way to find people that are willing to pay 10k plus a session is the tough bit. She ain’t getting clients at the money from seeing photos on a wall. There is a formula for doing it if your brave enough and willing to be cut throat enough.

Her "secret" is she got a PR company. The question she asked herself was that one day she was flicking through magazines and sees celebrities tag places like dental surgeries, or accessories companies and wondering how do these people get tagged...., so she hired a PR agency for this purpose and approached celebrities for her. Literally, an agent to get jobs.

She started out by herself, carrying speedlites to client's homes, but after 2 jobs she realised this is no good and then started hiring space as per jobs came up. This does mean she had to carry all her equipment back and forth. And that was tedious. Then she turned her own apartment into a studio, which she started to provide the kind of experiences talked about here as it is her own space and she can control the whole experience a lot more. She said after 8 months of this in her own home she moved out and got a permanent studio.

@Raymond Lin I wouldn't put too much stock on those Forbes lists either anyone can get on them it costs $5,000. I only know cause my wee brother has been listed a few times, great for marketing though.

Gonna be f/1.2 city in a few months so that’s Viltrox, Sony and Sigma bringing out new f/1.2 lenses and Meike bringing out a range of f/1.4 primes as well. Even TTartisan are making a.f lenses now.

Viltrox has some of the big boys running scared.
