Another few hours practising.
In between the action I wandered around looking over the high stone wall.
No lush pastures at almost 1000 feet.
The East Lancs moors have been industrialised for centuries. What was worked as a quarry is now worked for landfill, Pendle Hill (a few metres short of being a mountain) looms in the distance.

Another hot day at a sheep show. Not quite as hot as last time, but equally bright at times. Not only did I break out the flash again I shot in aperture priority a lot - which I never do!
I need more practice with the flash to stop the photos looking like they were taken for the local paper.

At last!!! I've been photographing a clipping day today. I've been trying to line this up with someone for a couple of years, maybe three. On Thursday I got a call that I could go on Friday, but I had something else on that I couldn't get out of. A phone call to the Heys this morning confirmed they'd be clipping again today. I grabbed the opportunity.
I've 450 pics to sort through! A few more in due course.

I've gone through my shearing photos from yesterday and I think I've got enough for my Lonk book project. Which means I have enough pictures to make the book and just need to make a final edit. That doesn't mean I'll stop photographing Lonks as there's always some pics I might improve on - and I'm already planning a second Lonk project!
Here are a few clipping shots.
The start of the day. The 'wool sheets' are hung up ready for the fleeces. A couple from the previous day need packing down.
Packing the sheets. When packed tight they are stitched closed.
If the sheep had been more visible I'd have been really happy with this one.
Pretty pleased with this. I kept trying to get a few elements in teh frame to help tell the story.

I just liked the two creatures, and the abstract nature of the lines and blocks of tone/colour.
Clipped sheep and stuffed wool sheets.
Clipping removes the flock 's marks on the wool, so those have to be reapplied before the sheep rejoing their lambs and head back to pasture. H is for Hey, blue is for twins (red for singles).
Reunited.

A very hot and parched Great Yorkshire Show yesterday photographing my usual victims!
The bright sun made life difficult. So lots of shadow recovery required at times. Maybe a little too much...
That meant I was back in psuedo-Parr mode using on camera flash again. This one might even make it into my book.
Moving from the show rings to inside the sheep shed meant I had to remember to drop the shutter speed. Or shoot in A mode again!
Lots of 'filming' going on for social media and TV.
Away from the Lonks and Gritstones I grabbed this shot of a Border Leicester being 'enhanced'.

Something different today. I haven't spent much time photographing the sale of prime lambs (destined for the butcher) but today I did. It was a chance to show farm kids at their Saturday jobs.
The main jobs are pushing sheep through to the weigh scales where they are recorded, into the sale ring, and then out to the collecting pens.
I think this one gives a good overview of the set up, and an idea of how many sheep there are to deal with.
You can see sheep that have left the ring being moved in the background.

Prime lambs sold to £210 according to the market report.
There was a breeding sheep sale on too with ewes selling to £290.

I think the other usual exhibitors were selling at Gisburn mart. The Morrises turned up, but as the judging didn't take long they missed the action.

They have minds of their own, do Lonks!
Considering the lack of sheep and the very tight confines of the show 'ring' I'm quite happy with what I got.
I was well out of my depth last night. I'd been invited to a 50th birthday party by one of my Lonk friends and asked to take my camera if I wanted but no problem if I didn't feel happy doing that. As it turned out I quite enjoyed it, but the results were crap by anyone's standards. I'm hopeless when I have to use flash in a hurry. And the lighting, indoors and out, was a challenge for a technically hopeless photographer! At least most are in focus and exposed reasonably.
These are probably the best.
A Martin Parr moment...
